Alternate pedigree

The Thornburgh pedigree presented in The History and Antiquities of the Counties of Westmorland and Cumberland is "the family pedigree (as copied from one remaining at Selside hall; by Sir Daniel Fleming in the year 1670 ...)" and shows William as the son of Henry Thornburgh and Elizabeth Boothe^[2]. An alternate pedigree is that William was the son of William Thornburgh and Margaret Washington and grandson of William Thornburgh and Eleanor Selfed^[2].

   "William Thornburgh of Hamsfeld esquire. He lived in the reign of king Henry the sixth [1422-61;1470-71]. He married Elianor daughter of Sir Richard Musgrave of Musgrave knight; ..."

   An alternate pedigree from "one of the genealogies of this family" is that William was the child of William Thornburgh and Margaret Washington and grandchild of William Thornburgh and Eleanor Selfed. The author, while acknowledging the likelihood that any pedigree has errors, discounts this alternate pedigree, commenting "But in all our disquisitions we have never met with any other person of the name of Selfed ..."

   "1435 William Thornburgh pays 8s. 4d. for farm of the tithes of Selshede; Roll at Levens."
   
   "1459 Eleanor Thornburgh pays 9s. for the farm of tithes of Selshede; Roll at Levens."

4. ↑ Birth year estimated based on approx. birth year of his grandson Rowland (1497) and on the assumption that he was the William Thornburgh who paid tithes in 1435.
