By family tradition, William Tapp was a grandson of King William Taptico, the last hereditary chief of the Wicocomico tribe of Indians of Northumberland County, Virginia, which was a part of the Powhatan empire. Members of the tribe intermarried with the English settlers and were assimilated with the general population. The surname Taptico was replaced by the Anglicized name Tapp.
