William Sweeney was born on 15th September 1877 at Kirkinner in Wigtownshire, son of Janet Sweeney, formerly Milroy, and her husband Michael Sweeney, an agricultural labourer. William appears in the 1881 census living with his parents and siblings at Kirkland Cottage in Kirkinner.

Sadly William died when he was only twelve years old, in 1889 at Penninghame.
