'William Sumner, of Bicester, (brother of Roger, the elder, and mentioned in his will below,) ... was buried 18th March 1596-7.'

The mention in the will is "I doe give and bequeath unto my brother Willm Sumner, his Children, being five of them, ..." The phrase "Willm Sumner, his Children" apparently is the equivalent of the modern "William Sumner's children", because William himself died several years before this will was written.

    2. Birth year estimated based on his marriage date and on the assertion that he was the brother of Roger Sumner who was married in 1601. Note that he was old enough to be Roger's father, but the author states that he was Roger's brother, possibly because William had a son named Roger who was too young to be the Roger who married in 1601. It is possible that the age gap between the brothers was larger than 20-25 years, if they were half-brothers.
