William Smoot took for his third wife Mahala Garn, born February 4, 1840, in Sandusky County, OH, the daughter of Philip James and Mary (Vogt) Garn. The marriage occurred on February 3, 1877. She had married previously on April 1, 1858, Daniel Garn who died in 1870, leaving her a widow with five children. She herself drove a team across the plains to Utah in 1855.
