William Smith was born in about 1871 in the town of Barrow-in-Furness in Lancashire, the son of a butcher named John Smith and his wife Theresa. The family appears to have moved about between Liverpool, Fleetwood and Barrow during William's childhood. The 1881 census finds the family living in Barrow, but William's two younger brothers, Edward and John, both claimed to have been born in Liverpool, although ten years later Edward claimed to have been born in Fleetwood.
In 1890, aged about 19, William was married in Liverpool to Christina Kelly from Birkenhead. They settled in Birkenhead, as did William's parents and brothers, appearing together in the 1891 census. William and Christina had four children together, but William died in 1902, aged 31. Christina remarried in 1904.

- ↑ There are numerous William Smith births recorded around 1871 in the Ulverston district, which covered Barrow-in-Furness at that time, any or none of which could be him. Unhelpfully it has not been possible to find his parents in the 1871 census, which would otherwise have helped narrow down whether he was born before or after that census.
