Subj: Children of James Smalley & Hannah Bickford Date:11/23/01 8:53:55 PM Pacific Standard Time From:gsmalley1@@cogeco.ca (G Smalley) To:Delijim@@aol.com (Jim Veregge) CC:kashuba4@@shaw.ca (Kathy Kashuba) Jim:- I was just looking at a message board on Smalley's on Ancestry.com and printed of your response of Aug. 25 2001. I have a concern that there may be a confusion on the wives of James son William. .I have a date for the marriage of Susannah Bascom, but no date for the marriage of Hannah Loomis. My searchings indicate that Hannah was te first wife and Susanna was the second wife. If this is not the case my complee family tree from then to now falls into disrepair. We contend that William with his wife Susa"na" emigrated to Ontario in 1802/3 and recieved a land grant in an area north of Toronto in July 1804. From this beginning all of the Smalley's in Ontario from that date until at least the mid 1800's are descendants of this family. They spread around Ontario and eventuall thoughout Western Canada and some to western USA. Will you please check your records and advise if you find any verification of your statement as it would be appreciated and solve a host of my problems thanking you in advance George Smalley gsmalley1@@cogeco.ca
To the list; I have been checking the rootsweb site on the Smalley's and find that info is missing or incomplete on William Smalley Sr.s/o Capt.James Smalley and Hannah Bickford.. This is porobably due toi the fact that William Sr. and Susan(na) Bascomb moved to Ontario in very early 1800,prior to 1803, along with their family and William Jr. s/o William Sr. and Hannah Loomis, a prior wife. who died in in 1786 and Sr. remarried in 1787. This family took up living on 200 acres of land ,granted to Sr. in 1804 on the south edge of Lake Simcoe just north of present day Toronto. William Jr. died in 1811 and his burial site is not known by this recorder, but he died intestata and record of the settling of his estate is on record at the Archives of Ontario. William Sr. took over the settling of the estate as his wife and an unknown number of underage children refused to undertake this task.Unfortunately the number of underage children and their names is unkown, thus the parentage of the many children attributed to William Sr. is uncertain as some could possibly be the offspring of William Jr.??.In any event Wiliam Sr. is buried in the Anglican Cemery of Christ Church in Roches Point Ont., with a date on the tombstone of18 March 1832 and his wife, who went by the name of Susan, droping the "na" died, per the stone 12 Aug. 1831.also at Roche's Point As matter of some interest an article in the Newmarket Era dated May 17, 1867 states as follows North Gwillimbury( which is the township in which they settled) in 1804,per a located census paper, consisted of a total of four families James O'Roach,William Smalley Sr., William Smalley Jr. and Anthony Lapan. The four families numbered 17 souls_4 male adults,3 female adults, 4 male boys and 6 female girls. The article goes on to say that Roach's Point and Smalley's Landind both took their names from these first settlers. From the above I believe that the US Smalley's can complete their lists on this family. If anyone has any names of the children of either William Smalley's I would surely appreciate it as I could then sort out some of the chikldren as based on the marriage of Jr. to Ruth Martingale in 1792 only Arad can be definetllybe attributed to Sr. although the following are known to exist as offspring of one of the two, Asa, Erastus, Roxanne,Ralph, Sophie, Jesse, Anna, and "H"Ester. George Smalley
