  2. Charles Elihu Slocum wrote two books giving the history of the Slocum Family. Volume 1 (Source:Slocum, Charles Elihu. Short History of the Slocums, Slocumbs, and Slocombs of America, Genealogical and Biographical (1882), says p. 566, "Capt. David Betts Slocum, son of David Betts, was born in Wales, Great Britain, about the year 1790, and was reared from an early age on the Elizabeth Island in Buzzard's Bay, Massachusetts, by a Slocum family whose surname he adopted." In Volume 2 (Source:Slocum, Charles Elihu. History of the Slocums, Slocumbs and Slocombs of America, Genealogical and Biographical (1908), his description varies. (Note: he apparently wrote using some rationalized spelling in vogue at the time, which makes this somewhat disconcerting. In the interests of not inserting an error, the original spelling will be used.) Page 6 on immigration: "1800. David Betts, born about the year 1790 in Wales, or Hartford, Devonshire, England, arrivd in America about 1800. When twelv years ov ag he waz adopted by a Slocum family living in New Bedford, Mass., or on an iland near; and they gave him the name William Frederick Slocum by which he was afterwards known." Glossing over inconsistencies, the basis for this story is unknown, and all records found (marriage to Rachel James, birth and deaths of various children) used the name William F Slocum. In particular, the birth in Wales is not used, and his origins are assumed unknown.
