    Notes for William Sams, Sr.:

William was born in Old Rappahannock County in the tidelands and grew up in Spotsylvania County. He was present at the muster of Captain Gills list in 1742 at the age of 25 during a period of active fighting against Indians who were attacking settler's plantations East of the mountains.

William and Mary deeded 100 acres to John Paine on June 4, 1744, 18 acres to James Sams, Jr. on June 4, 1745, and 34 acres to James Stevens on June 4, 1745. This is the last record of William in Spotsylvania County. He subsequently went to what in now Henry County, Virginia in 1746 where all seven of his sons were born.

In 1779, a record survey of 411 acres for William Sams, Sr. and a man named Watkins was recorded and platted on Saville Creek, a tributary of Smith River. The land was transferred to Watkins without record of compensation to William. There is no record of a will or probate record and there is no further record pertaining to him in any other county or state. It is probable that he died in Henry County, some ten miles Northwest of Martainsville. There is an old cemetery with field stones marking grave sites before 1800 and carved stones after 1800 when stone carvers became available.
