Early Land Acquisition in Virginia

Acquisition of Land from Virginia Northern Neck Land Grants:

  • H-174: William Poe of Orange now Culpeper County, 65 acres in said County. Surv. Mr. James Genn. Adj. William Watson & Poe's land now Norman's. Poe's Mt., Capt. James Compton. 11 May 1752. [Virginia Northern Neck Land Grants, 1742-1775, Vol. 2, Gertrude E. Gray, pg. 61].

Acquisition of Land:

  • Culpeper County, VA Deed Book B Page 130: Indenture made the 8th day of May, 1753 between Wm. Beverly of Planfield in County of Essex, Va and Wm Poe of Culpeper, Planter, 220 acres being a part of ye said land known as Wakefield in County of Culpeper. This land was deeded by Beverly to Wm Poe, Lydia his wife, and Wm., their son "the longest liver of them." They giving a crop note at Fredericksburg in Falmouth Warehouse for one thousand pounds of Topleaf Tobacco tied up with the same bundles and Cask.

  • Culpeper County, VA Deed Book A Page 15: Indenture between William Poe and Lydia, his wife, of the County of Culpeper and Cornelius Mitchel, land in the North Fork of the Rappanock River, dated July 20, 1749,
  • Culpeper County, VA Deed Book B Page 387: Indenture between William Poe and Lydia, his wife, and Robert Gungo of Culpeper of 200 acres contained in deed from the Hon. Thomas, Lord Fairfax, to the same Poe bearing date May 11, 1752.
  • Culpeper County, VA Deed Book C Page 309: Plat of land owned by Wm Poe and Lidia, his wife and Jas. Kennerly, 168 acres a part of 400 acres granted said Poe and Wm. Watson bearing date June 10, 1742,
  • Culpeper County, VA Deed Book D Page 215. Indenture between Wm Poe and Lydia, his wife, and Jas. Buckhannon of town of Falmouth, 110 acres in Culpeper County which land was also granted Wm Poe by Paten, 21 Apr. 1762.
