Family tree▼ Facts and Events
William Nancarrow was baptised on 2nd December 1793 in the parish of Creed in Cornwall, son of David and Ann Nancarrow. William later gave his place of birth as the town of Grampound, which was mostly in the parish of Creed at the time. On 13th July 1819, aged 25, William married Emma Courtney Sawle. She was from the nearby parish of Probus, where they married. They had a daughter called Mary Ann baptised in Probus in 1821. Some time between 1821 and 1824 they left Cornwall and moved to London, having another daughter called Mary Ann baptised there at St Sepulchre Newgate in 1824 (presumably indicating that their first daughter had died). They had another daughter, Emma Eliza, baptised at St Giles Cripplegate in 1826. Emma Eliza's baptism described William as a carpenter and gives the family's abode as White Street. Some time between 1826 and 1837 it appears that William and Emma separated. From at least April 1837 onwards, William seems to have been closely associated with a Mary Evans, formerly Cassanet, who was probably a widow. William witnessed one of Mary's daughter's marriages in April 1837. In 1840 another of Mary's daughters gave her address as 24 Tabernacle Row in the parish of St Luke, Middlesex. William appears at that address in the following year's census, described as a journeyman carpenter, living with a "Mary Nancarrow" who is presumably Mary Evans. William also witnessed another of Mary's daughter's marriages in 1846. Mary died in Southwark in 1850, aged 52. Her death was registered as "Mary Nancarrow", reinforcing the impression that they were considered to be husband and wife. The 1851 census finds William, his daughter Emma and a servant living at 24 St Thomas Street in Southwark. William was working as a foreman carpenter at this time. He described himself as married; his estranged wife Emma was living in Stepney at the time. She died in 1856, aged 58. Two years later, William married again, on 1st May 1858 to a Sophia Smith in Shoreditch. William was 64 when they married, and Sophia was over thirty years his junior. They had a daughter, Eleanor, born the following year. William died on 26th February 1862 at Great Leonard Street in Shoreditch, aged 68. Sophia survived him. References
