William James May was born in 1917 in Plymouth, Devon, son of Annie May May, formerly Goslin, and her husband William Richard Harry, a soldier. Sadly young William's mother died in 1918, when William was just over a year old, and he died later that year, aged seventeen months.

   Although there were two William J. May births in Plymouth district in 1917, the other one can be found living with his mother and stepfather in the 1939 Register and would have been a bit older than 17 months in the December quarter of 1918.
