- 16 Oct 1788, Hampshire County, VA Court Minutes: Mary Lyon, widow of William Lyon dec'd who was a soldier and killed in the Continental Service came into court and proved to their satisfaction that she is in indigent circumstances and that she has six children to maintain, the oldest of them being only twelve years of age which is to be certified to the Executive. [From pension records in the Library of Virginia] The Petition of Mary Lyons the distrest [distressed] widow of William Lyons a Soldier that fell at the Battle of Guilford [March 15, 1781] Humbly Sheweth, that your Supplicant is in the most distressing Circumstances of a Weak & sickly Constitution Two Children of without Home or Food supported with her small Family by Charity & benevolence of a Few good people & your petitioner hearing provision is made for distresses like mine prays the relief allowed her. Your Supplicant further sheweth that she nor nobody for her has drawn the pay of her said Husband she therefore prays that the Balance of pay due to her Husband may be drawn for the use of your Supplicant & her Children – & Your Poor petitioner shall ever pray S/ Mary Lyons, X her mark [p 4]
At a Court held for Hampshire County the 11th Day of October 1785 It appearing to the Satisfaction of the Court that Mary Lyon of this Count is the Widow of William Lyon deceased who was a Soldier in Captain Crockett's Company of the Seventh Virginia Regiment and was killed at Guilford Court House during the late War which is ordered to be certified to the Honorable the General Assembly Test: S/ And. Wodrow, Cl Cur [????]
[p 6] I do with the advice of Council hereby Certify That Mary Lyon relict of William Lyon deceased who was a Private in the 7th Virginia Regiment and killed in the Service of the Continent is entitled to the Sum of Eighteen Pounds yearly, which allowance is to commence from the first day of January 1786. Given under my hand at Richmond this 9th day of January 1786 S/ P. Henry [Patrick Henry]
[papers in this file relate to the annual authorization, disbursement and receipt of the pension due the widow through June 11, 1807, the date of her death. In 1807, she was living in Botetourt County Virginia and drew her pension in that County.]
