The "History and Genealogical Record of the Lawrence Family" says: WILLIAM CARR LAWRENCE, the fourth child of Nathaniel Shepherd and Mary Roberts (McShane) Lawrence, was born in the City of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, May 15, 1855. After completing his studies in the public schools he pursued a two years course in Salem Institute, Salem, New Jersey. He then returned to his native city, Philadelphia, and for two years was employed with the firm of J. P. Lippencott & Co., publishers. Upon his fathers retirement from active business in Philadelphia in 1873, he removed to Mount Holly, New Jersey, and was employed by the State Agency of the Girard Fire and Marine Insurance Company, continuing in their employ until June, 1886. He then removed to Trenton New Jersey, and became secretary of the Standard Fire Insurance Company, of New Jersey, and in 1865,1 at the death of the President, William Dolten, was elected President. He continued in that capacity until 1919, when he resigned on account of his declining health. Mr. Lawrence and wife were prominent in the social life of Trenton, and he organized and was for years President of the Park Island Canoe Association, and was also a member of the American Canoe Association. On his way to California with his wife in the fall of 1919 he was taken ill and died at a sanitarium at Clifton Springs, New York, November 13, 1919. He was married to Miss Ellen Kirkbride, Sept. 30, 1882, who resides at the family home, 412, Greenwood Avenue, Trenton, New Jersey. References
