(3) The name of Hearl is peculiar to Devon and Cornwall, but it has not been possible to make a connection from New England. William was at Richmond Island, Me., in 1639; later he removed to Portsmouth, N.H. (4) The early records of Portsmouth are lost. However, it appears that William Hearle had two wives. The name of first is unknown, while the second is considered by most authorities to have been the widow of Hercules Hunking. She is first mentioned by name in a deed of 1677.
