1900 U.S. Census for William's daughter, Mary Elizabeth, states William was born in Australia

April 13, 1859, 28 ½ year old Sarah married William Hastings, who was 35 years, in Boston by Reverend Robert McKendrick. (William gave his age as 31 on the marriage license. If so, he was born in 1828).

They crossed the Plains in 1859 in Edward Stevenson’s Company, driving a cow and an ox as a team.
