William Hardgrove was the first cousin of his wife, Mary Crawford, who was listed in the Hopewell Monthly Meeting records in Frederick County, Virginia, listed in the following record:
- A complaint against Mary Hardgrove, formerly Crawford for joining in marriage with her first cousin, and accomplishing the same by the assistance of a Baptist Teacher. [Source: "U. S., Quaker Meeting Records, 1681-1935, Ancestry.com]
- [Note: William's mother, Ruth Crawford was the sister of Mary's father, James Crawford, proving that William Hardgrove and his wife Mary Crawford were indeed first cousins]
William Hardgrove is mentioned in the will of Zephaniah Beall, Sr. 1708-1801.
- (Note: Zephaniah Beall, Jr. was the brother-in-law of this William Hardgrove. They both married daughters of James Crawford, Jr.).

From the Find-A-Grave page of grandson, William Loyal Hardgrove (1823-1905):
- His grandfather, William Hardgrove was born in Maryland in 1776*
 , and wedded Mary Crawford. Soon after he removed to Washington County, Pennsylvania, where he lived on a farm of 200 acres until his death which occurred April 26, 1821. His wife died April 25, 1823. Their children were Ruth, wife of John Sloan, member of Congress; Amasa, Wilson, Margaret, William, Reason, Sally, and John.
- the birthdate listed in "1776" is obviously incorrect and does not agree with other records, including the 1800 U.S. Census record showing William's birthdate as in 1755 or before.
