William Thomas Haines was born on 16th November 1847 and baptised on Christmas Day 1847 at Buckland in Gloucestershire, son of Susannah Haines, formerly Worvell, and her husband John Haines, a cow doctor. The family lived in the hamlet of Laverton in the parish.

In 1857 William's father John died. The 1861 census finds William living with his mother and siblings in Laverton.

William emigrated to America in the 1860s, appearing in the 1870 census living with his uncle Joseph Haines in Fort Ann, New York State. In the 1870s William moved to Iowa. He was married at Tama in Iowa on 8th May 1876, aged 29, to Mary Matilda Anthony. They settled at Sheridan in Poweshiek County, about nine miles south of Tama. They had twelve children together, although one died young.

At Sheridan, William worked as a farmer. In 1905 he said the farm was worth $22,000 and he owned it with a mortgage. By 1915 the mortgage was paid off and the farm was said to be worth $36,000, with William having earned $4,000 during 1914.

William died on 24th October 1918, aged 70. Mary survived him by about seven years.
