William Gray's origins are unknown. His first sighting is in 1668 at Heckington in Lincolnshire, when William was already married to a woman named Issack or Isitt. Between 1668 and 1680 they had three children at Heckington. There appear to have also been a fourth child whose baptism has not been found, but who was buried in 1686. William has not been traced after 1686. Issack died in Heckington in 1710, when she was described as an old widow, indicating that William must have died before 1710, although no sign of a burial for him in Heckington between the 1680s and 1710 has yet been found.
