    * * KELLEY GRAY MURDERED * *

    On the night of the 2nd of this month, William Kelley Gray, of Haleysville [Haileyville], Oklahoma, was shot and killed by Louie Hampton, an old man who was given to drinking. It seems that they had some words about a gun, but had gotten friendly and the old man got drunk, after they had made friends, and tried to shoot Mr. Gray, but Gray knocked the gun from the old man’s hands into the river. Next day he was sorry for the old man and gave him another gun, and on Sunday night, the 2nd inst., [sic] the old man waylaid him as he was going home and shot him in the back, three buckshot ending his life. The murderer made his escape, but every effort will be made to catch him and bring him to justice.

    The murdered man was born and partly reared in the vicinity of Fort Payne, and consequently had many friends and relatives in DeKalb and Jackson counties, and also in Dade county, Georgia. He was a son of Rufus Gray and a grandson of John A. Gray, of Lookout Mountain. His mother was Miss Minerva Tennessee Price. He was a good man and good citizen and many will regret to hear of his sad death.

    His remains were laid to rest at Bernice, La, where his only sister, Mrs. J.B. Adcock, resides. He leaves a wife and one little girl four years old. He was 33 years of age.
