William Godsmark was born on 6th March 1834 and baptised the following month at Crawley in Sussex. He was the first child of Elizabeth Godsmark, formerly Hart, and her husband Richard Godsmark, an agricultural labourer. They had married eleven months earlier. William had a younger sister, Harriet, born when he was two years old. However, she was the only sibling William would live to see. He died when he was only five years old, being buried at Crawley on 8th January 1840.
