William Ellis was baptised on 26th October 1828 at Little Wymondley in Hertfordshire, son of a farm labourer called Joseph Ellis and his wife Martha.
The 1841 and 1851 censuses each find William living with his parents and siblings in Little Wymondley. By 1851 William was also working as a farm labourer.
On 6th January 1855, aged 26, he married a straw plaiter named Eliza Moles. They married in her native parish of Willian, a short way north of Little Wymondley. After their marriage they moved to Graveley, another local parish. At Graveley they had a son, George, baptised on 6th January 1856.
William died shortly after George's baptism, being buried on 21st February 1856, aged just 27. Eliza outlived him by many years, but never remarried.
