Facts and Events
The Doten - Doten Family book says:
Connected unquestionably in some way with the family of Isaac Dotyof Oyster Bay, Long Island, but by descent as yet unascertained, is thefollowing family. For all the records of the Nova Scotia branch of thisfamily I am indebted to William R. Doty (No. 8927) of Hebron, N.S.
William Doty's parents lived at Fresh Meadows, and he was probablyborn there. Fresh Meadows, was a hamlet in Queens Co., lying betweenJamaica and Flushing. His father is said to have been a Presbyterian, and his mother a Quaker, both of whom died quite aged, 1770-4. William Doty, probably soon after reaching his majority, removed toWestchester Co., where he settled in the town of Westchester. He was ablacksmith by trade, and probably also carried on a farm, and raised hissons to the same calling. The Revolutionary War coming on, his oldestson espoused the Royalist side and joined the English Army, but thefather seems to have remained loyal to his country, and became the keeperof the jail, as well as the sexton of the Episcopal Church, atWestchester, of which Rev. Isaac Wilkins was the pastor at that time. After his death his sons, Elias and Charles, succeeded him as sexton. Heowned a house there, and when he left it lived with his son Elias. William and Elinor Doty both lived to be of old age, and died withintwo years of each other, about 1810, at Westchester. References
