William Curtis was baptised on 6th October 1818 at Benefield in Northamptonshire, son of Sarah Curtis, formerly Stanion, and her husband Charles Curtis, a labourer. When William was just seven years old his father died. Just under three years later his mother married again, with a John Berridge becoming William's stepfather. William's mother died in 1836, when William was still only 17.

Sadly William appears to have died as a young man when he was only twenty years old, being buried at Benefield on 16th June 1839.
