William Cox was baptised on 21st Septmber 1862 at Barnack in Northamptonshire, the eldest child of Elizabeth Cox, formerly Ward, and her husband Cox, a wheelwright. He grew up with his parents in his native village of Barnack, appearing with them in the 1871 and 1881 censuses.

William's father died in 1884. After their father's death, William and his brothers supported their widowed mother, appearing with her in Barnack in both the 1891 and 1901 censuses. She died in 1906.

William worked as an agricultural labourer and carpenter. He does not appear to have married. The 1911 census finds him boarding in Barnack.

Towards the end of his life, William suffered a serious illness (although his obituary does not specify what it was). He left Barnack and travelled to South Kyme in Lincolnshire, over thirty miles to the north, which was where two of his younger sisters, Elizabeth and Martha, had settled with their husbands. He stayed with his sister Martha and her husband at Poplar Farm there. He died at South Kyme on 4th July 1920, aged 58. He was buried back at Barnack.

   SOUTH KYME.
   OBITUARY.-On Sunday the death took place of Mr. Wm. Cox, of Barnack, brother of Mrs. S.T. Coulson and Mrs. Arthur Potter, of Poplar Farm, with whom he had been staying the in latter stages of a most serious illness. The deceaed's remains were conveyed to Barnack for interment.
