William Cole was baptised on 10th November 1816 at Thornbury in Devon, son of a labourer named John Cole and his wife Grace.

William was married in 1848, aged 31, to Elizabeth Drake. They married at Devonport, some 40 miles south of Thornbury. After their marriage they settled in Elizabeth's native parish of Bere Ferrers, on the banks of the Tamar, where they appear to have had at least five children. In 1851, William was working as a labourer in the mines - there were silver and lead mines in the parish. In both the 1851 and 1861 censuses the family was living in Bere Ferrers at 'Beer Town', which was the name given to Bere Ferrers village to distinguish it from the other hamlets and villages (notably the village of Bere Alston) in the parish of Bere Ferrers. By 1861, William was working as an agricultural labourer.

In the 1871 census William and Elizabeth were living at Well Farm between Bere Ferrers and Bere Alston, and had Elizabeth's elderly father John living with them. William was described as a 'hind' on this occasion, which was a type of skilled farm worker. By 1881 they were living at Leeches Farm.

William died at the age of 72, and was buried at Bere Ferrers on 18th March 1889. Elizabeth outlived him by four years, and appears in the 1891 census living with two of her daughters in Bere Alston.
