William Clay was baptised on 13th June 1785 at Great Hale in Lincolnshire, son of a labourer called Thomas Clay and his wife Hannah.
On 25th November 1806, aged 21, William married Rebecca Procter in the neighbouring parish of Heckington. They went on to have twelve children between 1807 and 1833, although at least five died young. Their first child was baptised at Wigtoft in 1807, and their second child baptised at Fishtoft in 1809. By 1811 they had returned to Heckington, where all their other children were baptised. In Heckington the family lived at Heckington Fen, the low-lying area to the east of the village. William worked as an agricultural labourer.
The 1841 census finds William, Rebecca, and two of their sons living at Heckington Fen.
Rebecca died in 1853, aged about 67.
After Rebecca's death, William went to live at Asgarby, near Sleaford. He appears there in the 1871 census living alone. He died at Asgarby Fen on 9th February 1874, aged 88. He was buried back in Heckington.
