    William L. Carty, a Methodist , was born in East Tennessee, a son of the Rev. John W. Davis Carty and his wife, Catherine Kelly. The Reverend Carty was a pioneer preacher who began his ministry in the historic Sinking Creek Baptist Church in Carter County.William's mother was the daughter of Richard Kelly , a Revolutionary War veteran.William came to Fayetteville in 1851 where he and Sarah Jane Moore were married 27 Nov 1855.Sarah Jane was the daughter of John and Sarah Moore of Fayetteville.William and Sarah had one son , Wyllie who died 19 Oct 1860 at the age of three.
