WM. CALKINS, departed this life Dec. 21. 1851. AE. 78. [Birth about 1773]
- These census record do not seem to support all the children assigned to this family by various sources. The death records suggest Horace, Sarah, and Lorenzo are definite. The presence of precise birth dates is hoped to indicate some record somewhere, though without seeing the record, it is speculative to say that. James death is found in Wilbraham records in early 1820, age 10, so he would have missed the 1820 census. But he is called James 2d, indicating there was also an early son James who died young. Horace would have been 15 and presumably moved out by the 1820 census, so maybe William is the male under 10. Unless Elvira and Eunice have moved out prior to 1820, it is hard to see that they belong in this family, since the only female children in 1820 would be less than 14 and 16 at the time of the marriages of Elvira and Eunice.
There is a William Calkins in 1810 census in Shelburne, Chenango, NY, with 1 boy and 2 girls under 10 (with 2 adult females, one his wife, one possibly a sister?) It is not clear this is the same family. It is the only William Calkins who appears to be named in the 1810 census. Assuming it is, the male under 10 would be Horace and one of the two girls would be Clarissa, the other girl under 10 in 1810 could possibly be Eunice or Elvira?
