I descend from a WILLIAM CALDWELL who appeared in Mecklenburg Co., NC as early as 1768, where he married a daughter of Edward GIVENS, who had come to Mecklenburg from Augusta Co. some 20 years earlier. William Caldwell was born about 1741, and from names given to his children I suspect his father to have been named James and his mother to have been named Mary. Since Mary, the wife of James mentioned above, was not among those proving her importation, it is possible that she was a second wife. Does anyone know anything about this family?
