William Cain was baptised on 9th March 1788 at St Paul's Walden in Hertfordshire, son of Sarah Cain formerly Archer and her husband John Cain.
On 25th November 1809, aged 21, William married Susannah Young. They settled in Whitwell, the main settlement in St Paul's Walden parish, and appear to have had seven children there between 1811 and about 1830. Their three youngest children were all baptised in July 1837.
William's father died in 1832, and his mother in 1844.
The 1841, 1851 and 1861 censuses each find William, Susannah, and some of their children living in Whitwell. William worked as an agricultural labourer.
Susannah died in 1864. They had been married for 54 years. William outlived her by just over four years. He died in 1869, being buried at St Paul's Walden on 10th January 1869, aged 80.
