Susannah Young's origins are unclear. As an adult she gave conflicting information on where she had been born, claiming to have been born in either Hitchin or St Paul's Walden, both in Hertfordshire. The ages quoted for her also varied, such that she could have been born any time between the late 1770s and early 1790s. One possibility is that she was the Susannah Young baptised at Knebworth on 24th June 1787, as Knebworth, Hitchin and St Paul's Walden parishes all shared boundaries in the area around the hamlet of Langley.

Susannah's first confirmed sighting is on 25th November 1809, when she married an agricultural labourer called William Cain at St Paul's Walden. They settled in Whitwell, the main settlement in St Paul's Walden parish, and appear to have had seven children there between 1811 and about 1830. Their three youngest children were all baptised in July 1837.

The 1841, 1851 and 1861 censuses each find Susannah, William and some of their children living in Whitwell.

Susannah died in 1864, being buried at St Paul's Walden on 30th September 1864. She was said to be 83 years old, although she was probably a little younger than this, otherwise she would have been about fifty when her youngest child was born. If the 1787 Knebworth baptism is her, she was 77 years old.
