  15. An inscription on the back of a picture of W. H. Byerly, written by William Henry III, it has the following:

    "W. H. Byerly 1 got his arm shot off and bled to death on the battlefield on his first day in action."

    In the Byerly Family of the Valley of Virginia (p. 80), however, it lists the following:
    "He died from wounds (cannon ball hit his leg) received at Pittsburgh landing during the civil war".
  16. He enlisted from Jasper Co., along with his best friend and tent mate, Franklin Rieman (who married his widow after he came home from the war).

    He enlisted for 3 years in the B 13 Regiment of Thomas H. Miller in the Iowa infantry and mustered on 21 Oct 1861 at Davenport, Iowa by Capt. Alexandria Chambers. [State of Iowa - Casper Co - court records of 4 Apr 1865].
