• 1808 - joined the U.S. Navy as a midshipman
• 1811 - promoted to Second Lieutenant
• War of 1812 - served aboard the USS Argus
• 14 Aug 1813 - captured by British forces ; imprisoned 18 months in Ashburton, England
• sustained a leg injury which required amputation
• after the war, commanded the U.S.S. Alligator
• part of the West Indies Squadron sent to fight pirates
• 9 Nov 1822/23 - died during a battle with three pirate vessels
