ELLSWORTH FALLS – William C. Allen, 86, died Sept. 6, 2005, at an Ellsworth hospital. He was born April 29, 1919, in Portland, the son of Eugene and Edith A. (Swallow) Allen. William lived in Dover-Foxcroft for many years, graduating from Foxcroft Academy in 1938. He later served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II as a radio operator on a C-47 aircraft. The main mission of his unit was dropping paratroopers on invasions, towing gliders and resupply missions. His unit participated in seven invasions. After leaving the service he married Edith E. Edes on June 9, 1946. They had two sons. In December of 1946 he went to work for New England Telephone and Telegraph Company with whom he stayed for 35 years. William was a member of the American Legion Chadbourne-Merrill Post No. 29 in Dover-Foxcroft for 60 years. He was a lifelong member of the Congregational Church in Dover-Foxcroft and later in Ellsworth Falls where he was a faithful longtime member of the Ellsworth Falls Union Congregational UCC Church. He was active in the Boy Scout program for more than 30 years and active as a director and past president of the Hancock County Homes Foundation, which provided housing for the elderly. In his retirement he and his wife traveled considerably in the west and were also fortunate to have visited Ireland, Scotland and Alaska. His retirement years at home were often spent at Camp Hatetoquitit at Lake Onawa in the township of Elliotsville. This island had been in his wife’s family since 1897. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Edith E. Allen; two sons, David Allen and his wife, Karen, of Ellsworth, Jonathan Allen of Penobscot; four grandchildren, James, Katrina, Dana and Thomas. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 9, 2005, at the Ellsworth Falls Union Congregational UCC Church with the Rev. Emily Taylor officiating. Interment will be in Dover-Foxcroft at a later date. Contributions in William’s memory may be made to the Ellsworth Falls Union Congregational UCC Church, P O Box 997, Ellsworth, ME 04605.
