  8. 8.0 8.1 Stories about Warren and Mary Bender Sisson
    From Marlow's Chronology section.

Marlow’s Grandpa Sisson, Warren John Sisson, died at his home in Rock Springs, Montana. His home was on the ½ section south of the ½ section that Loren Sisson had.
His funeral was at the house, and he was buried in the community cemetery west of the ranch.
In about 1968, Loren Sisson decided to have Warren Sisson’s remains dug up and moved to the cemetery in Miles City, but all they found was some of the metal from the casket, the skull, and some of the leg bones.

  9. Conversation
    with Marlow Sisson.

When Warren died, they laid him on a door that was supported by two saw horses in the living room of the house. Common custom.

  10. Personal Knowledge
    Leah Sisson Pace.

He is buried here at Miles City.

I think I had other information that said he was buried at Rock Springs. Was his body moved to Miles City?

  11. Conversation
    with Marlow Sisson.

In about 1968, Loren thought he should probably have his father, Warren's, remains brought to Miles City. All that they found when they dug up the grave was some metal from the casket, the skull and a few leg bones.

Right now I can't find the quote from Marlow, but I know I recently saw it.

  12. 12.0 12.1 Stories about Warren and Mary Bender Sisson
    Portion from Marlow's 1977 Biogragy.

Warren John had emphysema quite badly and walked bent over because he had problems breathing. He did very little work, as I recall, and no farming. I can recall my father going over and plowing his garden with a one-bottom horse drawn plow. It was pulled by two horses and had three wheels on the plow, and my father would ride on the seat of the plow and control the operation of the plow. It would only plow one furrow at a time, so if you had any size plot of ground to plow, it took quite a while to plow it.

  13. Stories about Warren and Mary Bender Sisson
    From Marlow's 1977 Biography.

I don’t ever remember much of them doing anything. I don’t know what they did for a living. I am quite sure that my father furnished them mostly with their garden products and milk and eggs and meat, probably, to help them survive.

Remember that by the time Marlow could remember them, Mary would be 60 and Warren 73

  14. Conversation
    with Marlow Sisson.

Grandpa had no cattle, just a garden, because of his emphysema. Loren cultivated the garden for them.

  15. Stories about Warren and Mary Bender Sisson
    From Marlow's 1977 Bio section.

Another thing that I can remember as a small child was walking over to my grandfather’s house and riding with him on a one-horse-drawn stone bolt. This was a sled type thing – it was small – probably 3 feet wide and 6 feet long. It was a thing with runners underneath it and planks on it. One horse could drag it. I guess they used them in the early days for dragging the stones out of the field. But grandpa would put 3 or 4 milk cans on this stone bolt and we would go down to his well which was about 3/4 of a mile from his house and we would fill these cans with water and the horse would draw this stone bolt back to grandpa’s house and that was about the only thing I can remember grandpa doing other than setting at the kitchen table playing solitaire.

Our modern celebration of Mayday as a working class holiday evolved from the struggle for the eight hour day in 1886. May 1, 1886 saw national strikes in the United States and Canada for an eight hour day called by the Knights of Labour. In Chicago police attacked striking workers killing six.

    From Marlow's 1977 Biography.

Grandpa wasn’t able to do much walking because he had emphysema quite badly. He walked stooped over and of course he was short on breath, so what he did he had to do very slowly and carefully.

  29. Newspaper
discharge of Loren Sisson from military.

Newspaper article reports his return home to Miles City from Fort Russell with his discharge. He was met by his father, Warren Sisson. Loren served in France 16 months with the 315th infantry of the 79th division. He says he had some hair raising experiences, although he returns without a scratch. Last fall while fighting in the Argonne forest a shell burst near him, almost completely covering him with earth. While he was in France, Warren Sisson has been "holding" his own and Loren's ranches. Warren says he is sorry his boy could not be home in time to help him celebrate his 64th birthday.
