Wanton Briggs, son of Jonathan and Abigail (Greene) Briggs, was born in Warwick, R. I., and resided there all his life. He was a prosperous farmer and a well-known and eminently-respected member of the community. He was a staunch Baptist and an active worker in the church. Wanton Briggs married Mary Tift, daughter of Solomon Tift; she died at Voluntown, Conn., July 9, 1886, aged seventy-four years. Among their children was Olney, mentioned below.
