Walter ( Pete) Smith Added by bonnie4tea on 10 Apr 2009 Originally submitted by CarolynShadd32 to Smith Family Tree on 20 Apr 2007 My Grandfather Walter ( Pete ) Smith born April 18, 1899 in Wooster, Ohio, was a retired farmer and construction worker, who was completing his first term on the Lawtey Commission. He was running for re-election for councilman in the December 3 election, but passed away on Nov. 25,1974, following a heart attack. His re-election, due to support of the Lawtey Concerned Citizens Committee, created the highest number of votes for this seat. A special meeting was held on December 16 to declare that a vacancy existed in the Group 4 commission seat due to Pete's death. A special election was held in Lawtey on January 27th to fill this vacant commissioner's seat. He is the only man known to be voted into office after his death.

  6. In 1930, Pete and Meda were living separately but apparently not divorced yet. Pete was living with a woman and her two children, for which, my Mom (his daughter) had a hard time forgiving him.
