Walter T Carpenter, aged ninety-nine, former superintendent of Earlham college and an prominent educator, died Wed. night at his home in Richmond. He was born in Duanesburg, Schnecdaty county, New York, January 1, 1811, and was four years old when his father moved to the west, settling on a farm in Clinton county, Ohio. The journey was made in a wagon, a cabin of logs being built on the wagon bed to house the family during the six weeks required to reach their destination. In Wilmington, O., in 1834, Mr. Carpenter married Susan Mable, whose death occurred two years ago. In 1857, Mr. Carpenter came with his family to Richmond and within a year thereafter was elected superintendent of Earlham college. He served in this capacity for fifteen years and was after his retirement made a trustee and served until 1893. Had he lived until January 1, Mr. Carpenter would have been 100 years of age.
