- 1812 - elected Captain of the Revolutionary Volunteers of Franklin County, a quasi-militia unit of volunteer civilians dedicated to defending Franklin County in case of a British attack during The War of 1812
- 1816 - graduated Philadelphia Medical School
- 1830 - purchased a large tract of land containing mineral springs which he subdivided into lots for a summer resort, eventually becoming the town of Estill Springs
- 1838 to 1838 - Tennessee State Senator
- 1861 - (age 72) enlisted in Confederate Army
- Civil war - CSA, Field and Staff, 1st Tennessee Infantry (Turney's Regiment)
- served as a surgeon during Battle of Chickamauga
