Virginia Jane Gwin was born ca. 1795 in east Tennessee--likely in the today's Wear Valley of Sevier County but possibly farther north in today's Green County--to Isom/Isham Gwin and Mary Canterbury Gwin of Virginia.
When she was in her late teens, her family moved to southern Indiana to escape the evils of slavery, and there she married first Joseph Tipton, by whom she had at least three children. When Joseph died, she married second Ben Weathers, by whom she had at least five more kids.
