Viola June ROSS was born in Marne, Michigan, amid the sound of fireworks on July 4th, 1921. She died in her home on September 4th, 1996 following a short illness. A graduate of Western Michigan University in English and Latin, she devoted her life to teaching students. She first taught with the Kellogg Schools in 1943, and also worked with her husband in establishing a portrait photography studio in downtown Kalamazoo. Later, she taught English and counseled high school students with the Plymouth, Indiana and Edwardsburg Public Schools. She was an active leader in the Michigan Education Association, and she was an advisor to the National Honor Society. She enjoyed travel with her family, reading and gardening. She is survived by her husband, Tom E. ROSS, her brother, William P. SNIP of Sparta, her children, Thomas W. ROSS of Kalamazoo, Timothy T. ROSS of Vancouver, WA, and Heidi A. ROSS of Morrisville, N.Y., and by two grandchildren, Emily and Christopher. A private family service is planned and any memorials should be directed to Hospice of Greater Kalamazoo or to the Westwood United Methodist Church. source: undated Kalamazoo Gazette 1996 References
