Funeral Parlor Suicide BY LAURA A. FAHRENTHOLD Thursday, March 09, 1995
An 80-year-old man shot himself in the head yesterday outside a Bronx funeral home, where he had just inquired about cremation costs. Frank Cieri, manager of the Guarino Funeral Home on White Plains Road, said the man walked in about 8:30 a.m. and asked an attendant if $2,000 would be enough to pay for his cremation. "The chapel attendant noticed he had a gun," Cieri said. "The man then asked if we had a basement he could use and then said very nicely, 'I won't mess up your rug so I'll go outside.' " Before the attendant had finished dialing 911, the man had left his wallet on the counter and turned the gun on himself just outside the door. EMS rushed the man to Jacobi Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival. He was identified as Victor Brenna, of E. 228th St. in the Bronx. "This has got to be the most tragic thing that's ever happened," said Cieri, adding that $2,000 was more than enough.
