Vernon D. Welker, 73, rural Little York, died at 11:13 p.m. Friday (Oct. 24, 2003) in Galesburg Cottage Hospital.
He was born Dec. 18, 1929, in Rapatee, the son of William and Leota Lutz Welker.
He married Caroline Allen on July 19, 953, in Berwick.
Surviving are his wife; three daughters, Barbara (and Doug) Wiechman, Payette, Idaho, Candie (and Mike) McDonald, Kirkwood, and Roberta (and Robert) Legendre, West Linn, Ore.; two sisters, Charlotte Beaird and Dorothy Cooper, both of Lewistown; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and a sister.
He was reared and educated in rural Fulton County.
An Amry veteran of the Korean War, the served from 1949 to 1952 and was awarded the Purple Heart. He worked as a truck driver for more than 45 years, driving for local trucking companies and farmers, including Glen Brown, Kenny and Fred Moore, Murdock Trucking, Ed Pruett and the last 13 years VSM Trucking in Monmouth. He also worked as a farmhand near Little York, and as a janitor and school bus driver for the Yorkwood School District.
He was a member of First Christian Church, Marion B. Fletcher American Legion Post 136 and the J.W. Clendenin Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2301 in Monmouth.
Funeral will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday in Hoover-Hall Memorial Chapel, Monmouth, with the Revs. James Epperson and Ken Muck officiating. Friends may call today at the funeral home; family will be present from 6 to 8 p.m. Burial with military honors will be in Cedar Creek Cemetery.
