Verla Grace Gowan, age 84, of Lawton passed away Wednesday evening, February 10, 2016 in Lawton.

Verla Grace Mosley was born on October 8, 1931, in Snyder, Oklahoma, to Fred Mosley, Sr. and Grace (Phillips) Mosley who resided in Mountain Park at that time.

Verla graduated from Cooperton High School where she was a member of the basketball team. On June 28, 1952, she married Earnest H. Gowan in Topeka, Kansas, and they established their home in Lawton. Verla served as a homemaker her entire adult life. She masterfully prepared two eggs and bacon every morning in a cast iron skillet for her husband and then took care of her four children.

When Verla found herself with an empty nest, she took up bowling which she enjoyed. The highlights of her bowling career included bowling in a tournament in Las Vegas and once bowling a 299. She also took up scrapbooking. The subjects of most of her scrapbooks were her grandchildren, with an occasional reference to her children.
Verla’s other passions in life included working the daily crossword puzzle, reading, making crafts, gardening, and playing the piano.

Verla is survived by her husband, Earnest Gowan, and daughters Cheryl Holland and David of Wichita Falls, Texas, and Gay Lynn Gordon and Larry of Lawton, sons Darryl Gowan and Connie of Duncan and Steve Gowan and Judy of Lawton, eight grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren. She is also survived by sisters Evelyn Faulkner of Granbury, Texas, and Frieda Faulkner of Oklahoma City, and brother Bill Mosley and Dixie of Amarillo, Texas. She is also survived by sister-in-law Dorthy Bennett of Topeka, Kansas, many nieces, nephews, and several friends.

Verla was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Fred Mosley, Jr. and Elbert Mosley, two sisters, Alta Fern Monson and Maxine Narod, and brothers-in-law Rudy Narod, Harold Faulkner, Mark Faulkner, and Max Bennett.
