Rhoades enlists in the African-American 55th Massachusetts from Newman in May 1863, age 33. Local researchers believe they are the same person. So for the sake of creating this tree, we have assumed that there is a biological father for Isaac named Rhoades. Harriet is a slave of the Redden family, this unknown Rhoades could be white, or another African-American. Isaac and his sister, Mary, are described as mulattos.
