'That a marriage between Nicholas Ide and Martha Bliss occurred at Springfield in 1647 is a fabrication and a confused one at that.' The author goes on to explain his thesis for the following:
- Nicholas Ide was Thomas' step-son ("son-in-law" being commonly used to refer to a step-son in the 1600s)
- Nicholas Ide married a Martha, who was buried 3 Nov 1676, but this was not Thomas's daughter Martha (assuming that the child baptized 8 Dec 1622 in Daventry was named Martha - presumably the church record is barely legible, as it was originally transcribed as Nathaniel)
