Tobitha may have been the child of either Absalom Shreve or Elizabeth Edgell from a previous relationship, since she appears to have been born before Absalom and Elizabeth were married. Note that she signed a birth certificate for her brother Pearley Francis Shreve (as Tobitha Street, so filed well after he was born), stating that he was his mother's 10th child, and that 2 of those children had died before he was born.^[4] If she completed the form correctly, then Tobitha might not have been the child of Elizabeth Edgell.

(Unless her parents were actually married in 1871, as the VR transcription in the index states - but the record itself clearly says 1872.) Her age of 8 in the 1880 census may have been designed to hide the fact that she was born before her parents were married. If her brother Lorenzo was born Sep 1872 (as his death certificate says, but other records state or imply Sep 1874), then she could not have been born Jan 1872.
