TOBIAS HANLINE is numbered among the honored pioneers of Wood CO belongi ng to one of the first families that settled in Montgomery Twp. Those w ho come to the CO today can in no way realize the hardships and diffic ulties which were met by the pioneer settlers who blazed the way through t he forests, and transformed the wild land into comfortable homes and farms .

Our subject was born in Section 1, Montgomery Twp August 7, 1836, the elde st child of David and Eve (Rumler) Hanline. His father was born in Somers et CO Pa., December 8, 1810, and his parents were David and Catherine (Wah rier) Hanline. David Hanline, Sr, was born in 1777, and became a pione er of Richland CO OH, where he entered government land. In the spring of 1 833 he came to western OH, in search of a location, and entered i60 acr es in Section 11, Montgomery Twp Wood CO laying claim to the same in the o ffice at Bucyrus OH, after which he returned to Richland CO. In the f all of 1833 he moved his family to Wood CO by team, and spent the fir st night in Montgomery Twp at the cabin of John A Kelly, the first settl er in the Twp. On reaching their land, the father and sons at once began b uilding a home of their own, a log cabin with a clapboard roof. In the spr ing of 1834 they were joined by the mother and other members of the famil y. The children were Betsey and Rebecca, both of whom married and remain ed in eastern OH; Catherine, who married John Stevens, and died in Bradne r OH; David J; Samuel, who died in Montgomery Twp; Tobias,, who died in W ells CO Ind. Michael, of IN; Sophia, who is married and lives, near Fort W ayne, Ind.; Ann, who married Amos. Arnold, and died in, Sandusky CO OH, a nd Eve, who became the second wife of Amos Arnold, and died in IN In th e, early "forties the grandfather of our subject removed to Wells' CO 'Ind ., again settling in a frontier region, his farm. being now a portion of t he city of Bluffton. There his death occurred in 1854, and his wife di ed in 1855.

David Hanline Jr, spent the first twelve years of his life in PA, then we nt with his parents to OH,, but afterward returned to his native State. La ter he resided in Stark CO and Richland CO OH, and in 1833 came to Wo od CO. He was married in Montgomery Twp June 11, 1835, to Eve, daught er of John and Catherine (Augustine) Rumler. She was born in November, 181 4, in Columbiana 'CO OH, and came to Wood CO with her parents in 183 3. The father of our subject entered eighty acres of land in Section1, Mon tgomery Twp erected a log cabin with a stick chimney, and there lived in t rue pioneer. style. In 1849 he removed to Madison Twp Sandusky CO whe re he secured 160 acres of partially improved land, there making his ho me until his death, July 30, 189o. He was buried in Eisenhaur cemeter y, in Freedom Twp. In politics he was a Democrat, and for many years serv ed as Twp trustee of Madison Twp. In religious belief he was a Lutheran, a nd was a most highly respected man; his widow is still living on the old h ome farm in Sandusky CO. Their children were: Tobias; David and Joh n, both of Freedom Twp; Eve, wife of John Kimball, of Freedom Twp; Molli e, wife of Christ Foster, of Freedom Twp; Catherine, wife of Reuben Kise r, of Madison Twp Sandusky CO; Cornelius, of Livingston CO Ill.; Elia s, Loy and Isaac, all of Freedom Twp.

Tobias Hanline attended the " Old Prospect School " that stood on the si te of Bradner. The German language was spoken in his parents' home, and wh en he entered school he could not speak a word of English. His education al facilities were limited, for, being the eldest son in the family his se rvices were needed on the farm. He remained under the parental roof unt il his marriage, which occurred September 18, 1860, in Monroe CO MI., t he lady of his choice being Miss Helen Gibbs, who was born in Tioga

WOOD CO OH. - 833

CO Pa., October 25, 1844, a daughter of Cyrus and Emily (Hunter) Gibbs. El even children have blessed this union : David H, of Cowlitz CO Wash. ; E va A, wife of Edward Donald of Bradner OH; John, of Pemberville; Estell a, wife of Winter Kille, of Freedom Twp; Wm, a farmer of Freedom Twp; Grac e, of Toledo OH; Clarence, of Bradner; Winifred, who died in infancy; a nd Donna, Aenid, and Hugh, at home.

Before his marriage, Mr. Hanline purchased forty acres of land in Madis on Twp Sandusky CO for which he paid $250.00, the greater part of whi ch he had earned by hunting. He lived in a hewed log house on that farm un til 1867, when he traded it for eighty acres in Section 25, Freedom Twp a nd received $100.00 additional. A log house stood on this place, but on ly five acres were cleared. He energetically began the work of developi ng the farm, and within, eleven years had cleared almost the entire amoun t, placing it under a high state of cultivation. He erected all of the bui ldings thereon, and made it a valuable property, continuing to reside the re until March 24, 1896, when he came to Pemberville, where he now ow ns a pleasant residence. In politics he is a stalwart Republican. He was f ormerly a member of the Grange, and the I O O F, and is a thirty-second de gree Mason. His life has been one of industry an application, and as a res ult he is now living retired in the enjoyment of a comfortable competence.
