Sergeant Timothy Gates of East Haddam marched for the relief of Boston in the Lexington Alarm in April 1775 and served for twenty-two days at that time. He was called 'Timothy Gates, Esq.' in the 1800 census. … he died there (East Haddam), October 9, 1819, in his 90th year."
